The film follows Tan as she undertakes a search for her own cultural background and identity. She seeks out her wider Chinese family, particularly those who lived through the anti-Chinese pogroms of the 1960s in Indonesia as well as those who left and settled elsewhere. She visits her parents, who left Indonesia for Australia. She briefly films her two siblings, who reveal their own different senses of identity. Her journey takes her back to Indonesia, and to other places such as Berlin, the Netherlands, Hong Kong and the ancestral seat of all Tans in China. In a voice-over toward the end of the film, Tan explains that she ‘started this journey in search of mirrors’ – images or individuals that might reflect something of her identity back to her. More broadly, the film draws our attention to the way families live in the world in a constant negotiation of place, kinship and cultural roots, and how these shape our sense of who we are.
‘I cannot give you my Forest’ is a modern day rendition of the David and Goliath story, played out in an Orwellian setting. The film is an intimate poetic window into the lives of the Kondh adivasis in Odisha- who eschew the duality of Man and Nature. The Kondh have internalised the Forest – pacing the rhythms of their lives with the cycle of the seasons. The Forest is a metaphor for their identity and their sovereignty. Against the foil of the bloodshed in what the Indian government calls the ‘Red Corridor’, their philosophy gives a counterpoint to the dominant discourse.
“When I told my mother a boy was hitting me on the playground, she said: ‘That’s because he likes you.’” So begins this exposé about femicide, with the sentence appearing in black letters on a bright red background. The film shows three women who survived abusive relationships—by becoming murderers themselves. Laura from Finland, Rachel from the Netherlands and Rosalba from Italy explain how and, more importantly, why they killed their partners. One speaks eloquently, another haltingly, but all three are candid.
