For 5000 years, man has sought to inhabit the more accessible areas of Europe, but at its very heart, in the high zones of the Alps, there exists a world parallel to ours. This is a world in which species have survived dramatic climatic upheavals, human exploitation of the land, and now the pressures of mass tourism. The Alps are home to plants and animals that owe their success to an amazing capacity to live in conditions that, for other species–humans included–would be barely tolerable. For them, however, this is everyday life.

Weaver of Worlds resulted from a collaboration by video artist Lydia Moyer and composer Judith Shatin. Having previously collaborated on a piece about the Civil War called Civil War Memories, Shatin approached Moyer about creating a video in partnership with her piece Hosech Al P’ney HaTehom (Darkness Upon the Face of the Earth). The music itself was crafted using direct digital synthesis – there are no samples; rather digital representations of waves were created and transformed into sound. The resulting music nonetheless has recognizable elements: sonic lightning, voices, a world coming into being. The video footage was shot and processed by Moyer on analog VHS equipment. She digitally edited and upscaled it in response to Shatin’s sound work, inspired by the story of Navajo/Diné weavers creating the world as they weave, leaving imperfections so that spirit has an entry point.

Controversial and provocative artist Larry Rivers ( 1923-2002 ) was recently the subject of a Vanity Fair profile, “Crimes of the Art”, and was on the front page of the NY Times twice because of the ongoing controversy with his two grown daughters who claim he emotionally damaged them by painting and photographing them in naked sexual poses during their younger years.
