After World War I, after the destruction of the old world order, nothing was recognizable--and what was rebuilt was only a shadow of the greatness and history that had been destroyed. Using graphic footage, commentary by leading experts, battlefield tours, archival artifacts, and previously unpublished images from L'Album de la Guerre: 1914-1919, this A & E Special argues that the Great War had a more profound effect on civilization than any other war in history, before or since.

Hitler to Hiroshima documents the horrifying drama of the Axis Powers' tyrannical campaign to enslave the world. Hitler s Germany, Tojo s Japan, and Mussolini s Italy joined forces to crush the free world. The full might of the Nazi war machine pounded at the gates of London and Stalingrad. Japan assaulted China and the island nations of the Pacific. In their darkest hour, the allied countries endured unrelenting attacks until their armies turned the tide. The allies would not be conquered. The forces of freedom fought back, striking at the very heart of evil. Hitler to Hiroshima tells the story of World War II in thirty-three chapters. It captivates with an up-close view of the epic struggle between the designs of tyranny and the will of freedom

Found film offers unique insights into the past, but only if it is carefully preserved. The Rescued Film Project, founded by Levi Bettweiser, is an archive of images that were captured on film between the 1930s and early 2000s. Each image in the archive was rescued from undeveloped rolls of film found in locations all over the world. In this short documentary, Levi processes and restores thirty-one rolls of vintage film shot over seventy years ago by a World War II soldier. Working with vintage film poses special challenges, but Levi carefully catalogues and develops all the rolls in his at-home processing lab, as the story of this one unknown soldier emerges.

As the German armies swept all before them, Britain stood alone to face this seemingly unstoppable force and an entire nation put their best foot forward. Some individuals would be celebrated with medals but countless hundreds of thousands of others would pass unrecorded or even unknown. Outside of Britain the men and women of the French resistance, the people of Malta and countless soldiers, sailors and airmen fought bravely to rid the world of such a poisonous evil.

The Battle of Shanghai has been described as the last battle of World War I, and the first battle of World War II. It was a warning to the world, a warning that was ignored. And it was the place where the destiny of modern China was set in motion. Based on the book “Shanghai 1937: Stalingrad on the Yangtze” by Danish author Peter Harmsen, this film introduces key figures in the conflict, chronicles how the battle unfolded over the course of three months, and explores the aftermath and years of war that followed.

Sniping proved an important factor in the static trench warfare of World War One. But after the war armies let the skill languish has mechanized combat units came into their own. World War Two thrust snipers back into prominence as the Russian, German, British, American and Japansese armies trained new sniper forces in diverse ways to address their own specific battlefield requirements. Snipers effectively sewed fear and confusion among enemy forces but also suspicion in friendly forces since they worked alone outside the normal operation of infantry units.
