Made on the cusp of the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, a film retracing the conflict in Northern Ireland from 1968 to the present day - notably the civil rights movement of the late '60s, the outbreak of war in 1969, the birth of a peace process in the early 1990s that ultimately led to the IRA cease-fires of 1994 and 1997, and the current all-party negotiations that today offer the best chance for peace to the people of Northern Ireland in over a generation. Explores the complexities of the conflict through archival footage and portraits of political leaders who lived these events and played an important role in the search for a peaceful resolution to the seemingly interminable Irish “troubles”.

One the most successful films ever made, The Battle of the Somme, shot and edited by Geoffrey H. Malins during the First World War, is brilliantly decoded in this riveting experimental doc that unravels fascinating secrets and manipulations. A compelling contemplation of the ownership of history plays out on intertitles taken from excerpts of Malins’s controversial autobiography juxtaposed with conflicting historical accounts and emotionally devastating clips from the original film. Dispatched to the front as Britain’s “Official Kinematographer,” Malins filmed from the muddy trenches to capture the valour and horror of “the big push” on July 1, 1916—a day that has become synonymous with the futility of war. The British alone suffered 58,000 casualties by nightfall. The rising tension in this fascinating deconstruction of propaganda, illusion, and “truth” in documentary is underscored by a haunting electro-ambient soundscape.

Even though the technology existed to produce colour at the time, most of the surviving films and photographs of the Great War were shot in black and white. It is a little known fact, but rare colour photographs of the Great War were produced by pioneers of colour photography at work on both sides of the lines. In 1903, the French brothers Auguste and Louis Lumiere patented the colour photography process and pioneered colour photography. On the German side of the line was the famous photographer Hans Hildenbrand. This powerful documentary brings those rare images to light. Of course the story of the Great War wasn't just recorded in photographs. The war artists both official and unofficial on both sides were able to present a vivid picture of the world as it really was, in full colour. This documentary film also features a remarkable and comprehensive record of the Great War as viewed through the eyes of the war artists.

Music elates, touches the soul and bypasses reason. Music is magic. But precisely this magic can turn it into an insidious weapon for music and violence belong together. The brutal power of African war dances, the ferocity of Maori Hakas, the earth-shattering roar of US sound guns blasting Metallica at Taliban hideouts the principle is always the same: Aggressive sounds demoralise the enemy and whip the allies into a frenzy. In Songs of War, director Tristan Chytroschek explores the extraordinary harmony between music and violence. Sesame Street composer, Christopher Cerf, always wanted his music to be fun and entertaining. But then he learned that his songs had been used to torture prisoners in Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib. He is stunned by this abuse of his work and wants to find out how this could happen.

Makariv is a small village near Kyiv. In February and March, there were battles here as the Russian army was on its way to Kyiv. Many buildings were damaged by shelling, including the local fire station. Volunteers from the organisation Building Ukraine Together set up a camp to help the firefighters restore the building. They woke up, did exercises, had breakfast and repairs, and in the evening shared their experiences and their own stories. Artem's friend was killed in Tokmak in the first days of the war, Ira witnessed the death of her family in Irpin, Dasha's father is in the Ukrainian army, Yura left the camp early because he went to the funeral of his friend who died at the front. These stories are much deeper than they seem. Find out more about youth and war, about repairing without experience and a summer camp in a bombed-out village in the documentary story by Suspilne Culture.
