Positioned at the crossroads of critical trade routes that linked Cherokee territory to the city of Charleston, the town of Ninety Six was a seat of power in the British colony of South Carolina. Ninety Six in the 1700s was a land of hope and opportunity, of conflict and revenge, a land of frontier justice. This was the site of violent struggles between Cherokee and settlers and among settlers themselves - those loyal to the King pitted against "Patriots" for freedom. Ninety Six played a significant role in the struggle for American independence from British rule. It was the site of the first southern land battle of the Revolutionary War in 1775, and the scene of the longest field siege in 1781.

This animated short film is composed entirely of etched woodblocks. It speculates on the legacy of the Cultural Revolution, alluding to the historical use of woodblock printing in disseminating ideology. Woodblock printing, which emerged in 7th century China, experienced a revival during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s as a means to quickly communicate information to a mass audience. One of the key proponents in China's modern woodcut movement was Lu Xun, whose philosophy is embedded throughout the film. For instance, Lu Xun's motif of cannibalism to describe the decay of Chinese consciousness is referenced when the protagonist pulls an insect from within his own body and eats it alive.

This is the story of a poet who lived at the time of the French Revolution. The poet's name was Andrea Chénier. He lived and died amongst love and bloodshed. The numerous words of truth spun by this revolutionary poet became poems for eternity. Even today, they continue to shine light on the hopes that rest in people's hearts. The tidal wave of the times, when everyone believes that the ideal kind of society has arrived, will in time move in the wrong direction. Ironically, Andrea and Maddalena will be joined together by a thing called love. Idealism, which has been pushed to the forefront of reality, is toying with Gérard's life. Before long, a raging torrent that provides an omen of the tragedy to come will overwhelm all three of them.
