Homecoming Song (2020) blends animation, archival footage and traditional narrative in a poetic documentary that tells the parallel stories of two men who came home. Many years ago Kaax’achgook of the Kiks.adi clan of Southeast Alaska disappeared at sea, and was thought lost by his family and people. Three years later he returned with a song telling of his experiences. When Pete Sidney came back after being away for six years fighting in the 2nd world war, his mother Angela Sidney sang this ancient song for him. (NB: Languages should include Tlingit, but that wasn't available in the list.)
Filmed in roughly one month between the end of October and the beginning of December 2005, the film is an honest portrayal of Jac Currie’s life after Katrina and one of his first trips back to the Gulf Coast after being stranded in New York. It shows Defend New Orleans’ transition to a valid social aid project and documents some of the destruction in New Orleans and on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Home Suite, Smith’s first video work, is a close-up journey through a domestic landscape and a journey through memory, containing only three cuts over the course of its ninety-six minutes duration. The experience of artmaking in Appalachia is a complex one. An Appalachian identity often creates a distinctive and strong relationship between person and homeplace, but artists are told they need to leave the region in order to learn and innovate. Being told to leave home and to escape tradition is a hard thing to reckon with, both as a person and an artist. When the artists we interviewed left home, their connection with a homeplace was what inspired them creatively much more than the urban, non-Appalachian communities they joined. As young artists in Appalachia, we wanted to learn from their innovations and their experiences of coming home in “The Art of Finding Home.”

A story about facing your demons.
A double exposure, a portrait of a body, a house that oscillates between its narrative past and its literal presence. The melodramatic, 1950s films of amateur filmmaker Joan Thurber Baldwin are psychically projected onto the house in which my grandmother raised seven kids as it is cleaned out and put up for sale after she passed away. Upholding the narrative structures of melodrama that often center around men, even when the films are about women, the film asks the viewer, as Thurber says in her introduction, to pay attention to the peripheries.
In the new production of the Return of Ulysses at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées all the ingredients were gathered for a successful show: the music of Monteverdi, a mythological story, a wonderful orchestra on period instruments, baroque specialists like Magdalena Kožená, Isabelle Druet and Katherine Watson, and finally the exuberant Rolando Villazón.
