Blackstreet, having released two previous albums, finally reached the peak of their success with the break-through album, Another Level, which was released in 1996. Powered by the inescapable smash single No Diggity, Another Level was arguably the finest album created by Teddy Riley, the leader of Blackstreet. Another Level was said to be masterful with its plend of street-level rhythms with urban soul and pop crossover. No Diggity reigned for four weeks on top of the pop charts and won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal by Duo or Group; it also pushed sales of Another Level past the four million mark. Gil Scott-Heron, one of rap's earliest (and unfortunately unknown) pioneers, gets his full due in Black Wax, the 1982 documentary recently reissued on video. Interspliced between performance footage of Scott-Heron and his Midnight Band are vignettes of him walking around Washington D.C., spouting his views on then-President Reagan (dubbed "Ray-Gun") and generally dropping knowledge. The live performance features many of Scott-Heron's best-known hits, including "Johannesburg," "Winter in America," and "Angel Dust," among others. Warm, intelligent, and insightful throughout, Scott-Heron is clearly enjoying himself and the opportunity to espouse his views. A must for any fan of Scott-Heron's, and definitely worth a look for fans of the funkier jazz music of the mid to late 1970's.

41st and Central: The Untold Story of the L.A. Black Panthers was the first part in a documentary series that follows the Southern California Chapter of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense from its glorious Black Power beginnings through to its tragic demise. The film explores the Black Panther ethos, its conflict with the L.A.P.D. and the U.S. Organization, as well as the events that shaped the complicated and often contradictory legacy of the L.A. chapter.

Five former Seattle Women Black Panthers tell their stories. This series of 5 short documentaries shares their individual stories in varied Seattle settings significant to the Seattle Black Panthers for Self Defense (SBPP), featuring an original score by SassyBlack. The Seattle chapter of the BPP was the first chapter created outside of California. The first chief of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, labeled them as one of the three most dangerous chapters outside of Oakland. The women as “keepers of the dream” worked alongside the men in the office, implemented free community programs that still exist today like the Carolyn Downs Community Clinic and free breakfasts before disbanding nearly four decades ago.
