The entry for the 1989 New Zealand Rally, round 7 of the World rally series was a little thin with the absence of the major factory teams, Lancia and Toyota. But this did not detract in any way of what turned out to be an action-packed and eventful rally held mostly on spectacular gravel stages. As usual Videovision were there to capture the action set in some of the finest and scenic pictures of the year on the rally calendar. The Sierra Cosworths were making their debut at this venue. Driven by British Open Champion Jimmy McRae and son Colin –the latter proved to be a sensation in his first Group A world championship rally, the 2-wheel drive Cosworths were spectacular especially on the gravel and this was sure to make life exciting for the McRaes. The British were certainly in force with Malcolm Wilson driving a 2WD Vauxhall Astra GTE who gave the British something to cheer about with a superb performance.

A superb momento of rallying in New Zealand. Only three European crews made the long trip - Jimmy McRae (Ford XR4), Simon Stubbings (Nissan 323) and Se pages Heider (Opel Kadett GS1). The Australiasian aces gave their all at this combined tarmac/forest stage rally but ultimately they had little hope of catching Austrian Heider despite valiant efforts from Ray Wilson (Nissan 323 Turbo). The slippery conditions caught out many competitors, the quagmire bordering most stages causing havoc, when even the best service crews took an hour to rescue cars which strayed but a few feet from their chosen course! All in all, an action-packed review of this round of the 1988 Drivers' World Rally Championship.

Hot favourite for the eighth round of the World Rally Championship, to take place in New Zealand, was up-and-coming Swedish star Kenneth Eriksson in the Volkswagen Golf 16-valve GTI. Few of the major manufacturers undertook the long trip to Auckland, making the event one in which the talented youngster could acquire valuable points. This video follows his progress throughout the four days of the rally, which featured 36 special stages with exotic names such as Mystery Creek, French Pass and Rerewhakaaitu. The AWA Clarion event was supported by Ford through the Motogard Rallysport Team which entered a Sierra XR 4x4 for Stig Blomqvist, Lancia with Markkus Alen's Portuguese recce car in the hands of Franz Wittman, and Subaru, Mazda and Nissan, though not in factory-backed trim.

NEW ZEALAND The young Juha Kankkunen - series leader - came to New Zealand full of confidence. The Peugeot driver’s main rival Markku Alen (Lancia Delta S4) was determined not to let the French opposition retain the World Manufacturers’ Championship without a fight. And a fight it was! ARGENTINA The Championship had reached fever pitch by the Argentinian round. Both Lancia and Peugeot were desperately trying to recruit experienced drivers to boost their chances. Peugeot managed to secure the services of a certain Stig Blomqvist - and by the end of the rally the team had cause to thank him. His crucial third place had saved the day for Peugeot even though it was Lancia’s rising star Miki Biasion who had finally taken his first major win. With Kankkunen sidelined by mechanical problems, Alen’s second place closed the points gap in the Championship race and the rallying world looked forward to the next battle - the 1000 Lakes!
