This film is the achievement of a process initiated by a fascination with the split movement images Eadweard Muybridge made in the 1870's and 80's. It has become a cinema fantasy on its own origins, an imaginary archeology in some ways.
Originally ordered as an armoured infantry support vehicle, the Assault Gun or 'Sturmgeschutz' (Stug) was increasingly employed from 1942 onwards as a tank destroyer. It was responsible for the destruction of around 20,000 allied tanks. This is the story of Stug III and IV.
Interview with Slavoj Zizek
In the mid 1980s, I heard Memphis's very own RANDY BAND and decided I would collaborate with their bass player Randy Chertow on a movie. Tommy Hull wrote this song "You" and I shot this Super 8 Movie to go with his great melody. In this movie, you will see band members Chertow, Tommy Hull and George Reineke. You will also see my wonderful sister Dana Sachs and great friend Kathy Steuer. I too have a small cameo you might catch. Some of the film is shot in the Fairgrounds in Memphis and some in the now long gone but dearly cherished MUSEUM OF THE UNKNOWN in Marin County, California.
I fixed my camera onto the trees around my lower Queen Anne area home in Seattle from my deck. I then backed up the film to beginning and re-exposed the film from another angle. I passed my hand in front of the lens during the second exposure to blend the two images together. The sound for this film was created from industrial sounds I recorded also in the same area and manipulated with effects.

A variation on the oedipal myth.
The pictures in this film are a series of still-life images with occasional interventions of movement. They are of various parts of a domestic interior, tabletop, sofa, mantle-piece, kitchen sink etc. and are ordered as autonomous sequences of shots. As such they constitute a narrative. The soundtrack, a series of domestic sounds and conversations constitutes a separate narrative. Occasionally sound and image coincide in different ways, but for the most part they are juxtaposed. The conversation will concern the relationship of two people living together.
The "Films Imaginaires" are made up of only texts, filmed in cardboard boxes for the screen, of various works already shown to the public at the time, and which have been printed here or there, then gathered in the larger edition of my "Œuvres de Cinéma". The simple passage into photograms, then into the projection of these texts, with sound, transforms these "films" into another kind of film creation, even more advanced.
