In 1947 by the Beskid mountains, the traces of war still linger, destroyed tanks dispersed throughout the farmland creating an eerie backdrop. This film follows a ten-year-old boy and the strange visions he encounters, his world of fantasy exacerbated with ample time, space, and a lack of companionship or guidance. We see the adults that influence and dominate his life, for better or for worse. Surreal and packed with an excellent study of human emotions and motivations compounded by their rural, isolated vacuum of a town, this is a timeless and severely underrated film from a brilliant Czech director.
This documentary tells the forgotten stories of some of the most influential personal computer pioneers in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the late 1960s, big mainframe computers owned by large corporations and the government were seen as tools of control. The Hippie movement and the anti-Vietnam war protests served as a hotbed for a revolutionary idea: creating an affordable home computer to be used by ordinary people as a counterbalance to Big Brother. Well, the rest is history, but what has happened to the early ideals and the initial ethos of free sharing? As one of the visionaries puts it: Its true that what I helped to create is todays establishment. Thats what I was trying to get rid of:the establishment.

Karel Vachek’s latest documentary essay deals with the fine line between an internal belief in God and institutionalized religion. At the same time it brings up the need for a healthy sense of skepticism and the benefit of not believing in anything that advertises itself as certain. The filmmaker sets out for the USA, Japan, Great Britain, Poland, and the Balkans in his sometimes amusing investigation of spiritual substitutes, such as esoteric "teachings” or various fraudulent and magical practices, to which we sometimes fall prey due to our natural religious cravings. In addition to a Czech "prefab” family, who describe the carryings-on of their poltergeist, well-known mystery buffs appear in the film: Erich von Däniken, Raymond Moody Jr., and Ivan Mackerl.
In "The Real Death Valley," The Weather Channel reveals the little-known story of hundreds of migrants who have died in the sweltering Texas brush over the past five years while attempting to evade a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint that's not even on the border - in fact it's 70 miles inside the United States. "'The Real Death Valley' is an important story that needs to be told," said Emmy-winning correspondent John Carlos Frey. "We take viewers on the same four-day, 40-mile trek, through tough terrain and sweltering heat that's taken by the migrants themselves. And we ride with law enforcement as they discover migrant corpses, up to four a week during the hot summer months. I think it soon becomes clear why so many people are losing their lives." "The Real Death Valley" was produced by the Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning team of Solly Granatstein and Shawn Efran for Weather Films, the award-winning digital documentary unit of weather.com.
