Little Jean-Claude was adopted by former singer Jacques Duffot and his wife Anne-Marie. The child's mother, Simone, is determined to take him back, happily advised by the director of a private agency. They persuade Anne-Marie that Jacques is the legitimate father. Distraught, the young woman leaves home. Jacques resumes his singing career, but Jean-Claude refuses to accept the separation and fries him to death. The couple reconcile at his bedside, while Simone tiptoes away.

On an island off the coast of Guadeloupe, two sisters, Myriam and Vanessa, have planned to stay for a few days in the family house, where the sweet memory of their grandmother is still vivid. But Vanessa is not aware that a particular guest is expected for lunch. When she catches sight of her father, a cold and quiet man that she didn't want to see anymore, it is too late to escape the confrontation. Jan-Erik Widgren meets the lonely Bertha Olsson, a woman struggling with alcoholism. Though Bertha is already linked to Caligula, Jan-Erik's heartless teacher, she begins a relationship with the boy anyway. When Caligula learns that Jan-Erik is having an affair with Bertha, he begins to torture his student psychologically. He reserves his cruelest behavior for Bertha, however, which results in a tragic turn of events.

Full of revolutionary romanticism and also influenced by western culture in his final years at high school, Salmi declares his atheism to his father, but hides from everyone his love for his English teacher, a beautiful young woman from Paris.
