It is said that a wolf roams in the Park of La Favorita in Palermo. No one has ever really seen it. Yet people swear they heard it howling at night. Is it a fantasy? Is it an expression of superstitions and tales? Many stray dogs live in the park. Two sisters take care of them every day. Among the thick branches and crowns, certain people hand secrets out, kids play hide-and-seek, runners pass by and some prostitutes wait for sporadic clients in the sunlight. At night the scenery changes: the tones become more confidential and in the dark, intimacy, life stories, obsessions and memories of those seeking refuge in the park, resound among the branches.
Callousness and indifference... When they are around, trouble happens. Everyone needs help sometime. The outstretched hand of a friend in time, the understanding and support of loved ones, the love and sympathy of others. This film is a man's cry for help that goes unheard and unanswered because it cannot permeate the mountain walls.

This video essay surveys fifteen mainstream science fiction films of the 21st century, highlighting the conspicuous and melancholy recurrence of 20th century culture (songs, fashion, movies) in their diegetic worlds. I bring attention to this trend through the lens of the end of history, the ‘mythic umbrella’ under which narratives of the future are cultivated (Mosco 2004: 72). The persistence of culture from before the digital era proper, along with the prevalence of dystopian fiction, posits the transition to a globalised digital world as a fall from grace, or the ‘afterlife’ of history.

From 1977 to 1991 an image of Slovenia as a green, demilitarised and peaceful country of diligent people reigned in Yugoslavia, a country where differences are not only allowed, but also desired. This period ends with a ten-day war, when the identity turns from peacefulness, modesty and diligence into courage and a fighting spirit. The film documents the changes in Slovenia and its inhabitants, which have in recent years brought us to a completely different understanding of national identity, different from the one which was true in Slovenia as well as abroad twenty years ago.
Drawing together footage, photographs and texts from archival sources as well as the artist’s personal collection of materials, Yto Barrada’s new film is as much a poetic enigma as it is a portrait of identity. The documentary There was no time for sadness tells why Colombia has been the scene of an armed conflict for more than 50 years and how citizens have survived this long period of violence. Winter which was not there’ can be seen as a metaphor for the liberation of an individual from his or her own history. In the film, a man watches a monumental concrete sculpture of a man being hoisted out of the sea. The sculpture is clearly reminiscent of a classic heroic monument but in a strange, and somewhat uncanny way, the face and figure of the sculpture look amazingly like the man who’s watching it rise out of the sea.
