Taking as its departure point the 1993 opening of the Channel Tunnel, Là Bas is a playful burlesque on cultural difference, eccentricity and passion. Using different locations, Kötting knits together an imaginary tunnel, with tickets sold like a seaside attraction, through which one walks between England and France (the interior shots of the tunnel are of the Greenwich foot tunnel), and which is subject to random and sudden closure like many other British forms of transport.

As a child, an inventor Alexey Garagashyan drew a detailed map of his village, but he immediately became interested in what was beyond its borders. So his main passion appeared - to overcome the bad roads. Every time he met impassable routes, he just created new modifications of transport. First, they were motorcycles, and then unique off-road vehicles, which became a sensation all over the world. Today, Alexey Garagashyan can travel without being attached to the roads, but only by choosing directions.

It started off as personal letter I imagined a woman like me would write to, say, a lover back home. I initially had an image in mind to talk to but gradually that image fell apart, became obscure, diverse and unrecognisable. Amidst the minute, unconnected pieces I had to ‘make up’ that image myself. Making this film forced me to rethink my relationship with that image and if possible, exorcise it. – Y.C.
