Sexual subcultures and the outsiders of society welcome us in the Boulogne forest west of Paris, where anyone can live out their inner fantasies.

The teenage Jirka (J. Procházka) likes to spend time with his aunt (Š. Ranošová) in a secluded village. He does not feel comfortable at home. His mother (J. Vaňková) and stepfather Ivan (P. Pelzer) scrape together every penny to save up for an expensive kitchen set and a Persian carpet. His mother is not very fond of his aunt and does not like Jirka's visits. On her next visit, the aunt gives Jirka her husband's carpentry tools. Jirka meets Jakub (M. Holub), an old carpenter, who helps him repair an old kitchen sideboard. Jakub shows the boy how precious wood the sideboard is made of. The two become friends. However, their mother is about to throw the sideboard away

A video art film which shows various arrangements of wooden planks into precarious, non-functional arrangements. The artist then attempts to disrupt the arrangements into toppling and, through repeat editing, emphasizes the acoustic quality of the wood pieces collapsing.

Inspired by biologist Suzanne Simard’s concept of network topologies, which denote the intricate interrelationships of forest ecosystems and include both human and nonhuman life forms, artist Pia Rönicke conjures a polyphonic narrative of nature as an arena for complex and conflicting forces. A network of narratives that ‘Drifting Woods’ activates through botanical studies, close observations and conversations with some of the local and visiting people who work in and with the forest. Over the last 250 years, large-scale industry has increasingly capitalised on natural resources in a process where the mapping of the forest has been singularly focused on reducing both land and trees to raw materials. Rönicke dares the opposite movement: a ‘de-mapping’ of the forest and a decentralisation of the modern gaze that always places humans as the natural centre of everything. The film ‘Drifting Woods’ is based on Pia Rönicke’s installation of the same name.

Now only a few old and tired practitioners are left and they reveal to the camera their anti-earthquake construction techniques. The average age of the craftsmen is 80 years old.
