The Resist

The footage captures the artist’s journey and her visit back to her home country, China. Shot with a 16mm camera, the film raises questions towards her sense of belonging and definition of home.

Directed by Hava Kohav Beller, this stirring documentary chronicles the anti-Nazi resistance movement within Hitler's Germany and the countless unsuccessful attempts to remove the führer from power.

When 31,000 policemen take action against 50 tree occupants and tear gas and truncheons are used, a 550-hectare "pedunculate oak-hornbeam-lily-of-the-valley-forest" becomes a symbol of resistance. Since 2015, director Karin de Miguel Wessendorf has accompanied the protests against the clearing of the Hambacher forest and against the destruction of the villages on the edge of the lignite opencast mining, the largest CO2 source in Europe. First it was only a rebellion of individual groups with different goals, but in the autumn of 2018 the protest against the clearing finally becomes one broad supraregional movement.

It chronicles the journey of the Coalition of African Lesbians’ resilience in the face of great hostility while attempting to gain deserved and earned Observer Status at the commission. Despite the African Commission’s sessions being days and weeks of meetings with long conversations, dense legal language and negotiations, generally a space that rarely inspires creative expression, the director has managed to successfully capture the stories behind the story, of the collective of people, individuals and organisations that rallied with CAL.
