A documentary feature by Jun Geng. Poet Zhang Rare once studied at the Beijing Qingmei Academy. Due to pressure he felt living in the city, he feelings of depression, he returned to his hometown and taught middle school. But his depression got worse and he was diagnosed with schizophrenia; he his job and, stayed home, and began to focus on writing his poetry.
In 2012-2015, recruited Kazakhstanis most often left for Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq and Syria. It’s impossible to calculate the exact number of people that left. They often had no documents and when they left the country, they ended up falling into the hands of the extremist groups. Our documentary is about Ganibet, a woman that wanted to find her nephews in Syria and referred to Erlan Karin, an expert on matters related to terrorism, for help. How did the story end?
“My best friend, Anna, asked me if I would mind taking her fifteen-year-old son Itvan to Berlin with me. I accepted immediately.” An elegant, refined man in his forties sets off with Itvan on a long, enjoyable journey, his Winter Journey. They cross snowbound Germany by car. As the man drives the boy through cities and countryside, Itvan discovers the past and the vast job of reunification now underway. Poetry and culture are also part of the journey, which is accompanied by classical German music. When their paths cross with the man's former lovers or the journey provides unexpected encounters, Itvan also gets to know more about the man's own life. When they finally arrive in Berlin, their ways must part. Itvan watches the man leave, taking the melancholy of his existence with him. However their journey together has created an unbreakable tie between the two men. Itvan will never be the same again.

Marcel Lozinski was born in May 1940 in Paris, and he spent part of his childhood in various children’s homes. His Jewish communist parents were members of the resistance. After the war he went with his mother to Poland, where he became a celebrated documentary maker of some 20 films. Prompted by his son Pawel, also a renowned documentarian, the pair embark on a road trip from Warsaw to Paris. Father and son point the camera at each other and themselves and take stock of one another. In the end, the two men each made their own film about this journey.
