The In Between

Fifteen years of bloody civil war have left deep marks on Lebanon’s politics and society. More than 25 years after the war’s end, the capital, Beirut, is still fraught with tension. Filmmaker Marlene Edoyan follows two women, members of the same generation who apparently have nothing in common. Hayat and Wafaa, one Muslim and the other Christian, live in a place where Hezbollah and the Phalange are well-established political parties, and where nearby conflicts only stir up bad memories. Is reconciliation possible in a city carved up by invisible borders? In masterful direct cinema style, the filmmaker observes ideologies through the often-ignored prism of women’s perspectives.

In the north of Russia, far beyond the Arctic Circle, on the shore of the White Sea, on the Kanin Peninsula, there is an amazing settlement. The houses in it, almost to the roofs, are covered with sand, and the streets are somewhere deep under the sand dunes. From a distance, this village can be mistaken for an abandoned one. But people live there. The film tells the story of the dramatic transformation of Shoina-a thriving fishing village-into a dying village, almost completely buried in the sand.

Yanti lives in a village with her sibling, Nur, whose psychological development is stunted. Yanti works to earn a living for the both of them. One day, she meets Arman when he accidentally hits Nur. A romance grows, but Yanti holds back when she finds out that Arman comes from a rich family. Arman’s biggest obstacle comes from his parents who disapprove of their relationship. Then Anton has a misunderstanding with Nur and he is tortured by her to the point where he has to be hospitalized. Due to this incident, Yanti moves out of town and becomes a florist. Arman’s father finally gives in and fetches Yanti for Arman’s sake.

It’s summer and it feels like everything is melting. The body melts in sweat and the afternoon fades into endless nights. Weird dreams invade Shade’s sleep and unexplainable lights appear in the sky. Between work, home and friends, Shade seems to be floating. They are in suspension, in an intermediate state in which the reality of the world does not sustain itself.

After a long time, Ema returns to her native town as her father suddenly falls ill. Staying at her parents’ home, she is flooded by childhood memories, which lead us to conclude that there is a problem in the family relationships. The problem also hovers above Ema’s relationship with her sick father, as we see her uneased. However, when Ema stumbles upon a box full of snow globes at her family home, we learn that she was sexually abused by her father when she was little, and he gave her snow globes as a gift.

Gaspésie, early 1990s. Claire’s Parents, Jenny and Walter, are in obvious despair. Months after their breakup, her mom’s trying to pull away from her ex, but he refuses to let go. As Claire is spending the week end with him, Walter goes out to the village’s motel bar. When she sees that it’s getting late and that her father is still not home, Claire then decides to fallow a rabbit trail in search for him.

Mel is a photographer who preferably takes pictures of trees, used hotel rooms after sexual encounters and the streets of her hometown Trujillo. After her mother dies, she learns about a large debt she has left her. In an exhibition about her city, which she has organized with some colleagues, her picture catches the attention of a woman whom Mel has already come across in her photographic expeditions on the streets. They develop a special connection while accompanying each other through their days, wandering in a black and white Trujillo.

At a hilltop cottage, Giorgio and Matteo are hosting a dinner party for Giorgio's artistic friends from the city. As the group discuss art, cinema and gossip, Matteo becomes withdrawn. He goes inside and turns on his video camera, and through its lens he sees for the first time what his and Giorgio's relationship really is.
