Pippo is a stage director who visits a refugee center to see how the refugees spend their days, in a sort of limbo made up of painful memories and fears for the future. Little by little, the refugees open their hearts to the director and tell him their stories, some of which will be in this film, others staying secret. In the end, the idea of staging the Gospel takes shape, as incarnated in these individuals, who inevitably find themselves key players in a new age.

In 1970, the Old World Southern gay culture was changing, enter The Pagan Babies, a loose group of artists and drag queens who set out to challenge the hierarchical homosexual society with guerrilla theater interventions and fantastic costumes. Before Robert Mapplethorpe's infamous photos, there was R. Michael Walker and John Ashley who documented the Pagan Babies. The film also features a Kuchar film and this is what happened.

Evangelio mayor is almost entirely shot in the building which was being renovated in Madrid between 2019 and 2020 to house the Josete Massa LGTBIQ+ public residential care home for the elderly, the first of its kind in the world. The film takes advantage of the site under transformation to stage two things. The first is the lucid and harsh testimony of Ramón Barreiro, struck by AIDS in the early eighties and a survivor after many years of struggle and serious aftereffects. The second, a series of dialogues taken from the four Gospels, in which elderly members of the LGTBIQ+ community cite “the old words anew and in a new way”, as one of the notices which can be read at the beginning of the film states. Provocation is by no means the primary intention behind showing them; nor are they composed of irony. Rather, the film understands that the biblical text, as the basis for rituals and stories shared by generations, is a vast framework or grand code which can be harnessed dramatically.

Raymond Anthony Myles was the electrifying Gospel Genius of New Orleans. Like a comet shooting across the sky, he was here one minute – brilliant, incandescent and unmistakably unique. And then, just as quickly, he was gone… But Raymond was more than a maverick musician. He was also highly representative of a vital but scorned minority within the Black church: a queer man who struggled with dogma and Scripture that said, "God's love does not apply to you."

In the palimpsest of a city like Naples, which holds countless stories in its heart, we stumble upon that of Ciretta, the 27-year-old son of a prostitute and an unknown father, who occasionally sells his body too, but also worships the Madonna and has an almost heavenly voice. The outcast child of a society that often has no room for those who do not fit into molds, Ciretta will find refuge and companionship among the people who gather around an old theater in Naples, now closed due to the pandemic. There he will dream of the possibility of a better life, until the theater is sold to become a hotel. Ciretta will be forced to find a new haven for both himself and his beloved statue of the Madonna, in this tender, melancholy tale of battered people who seem born to be movie heroes, and a city that changes almost before your eyes.
