Marco and Giuseppe marry their sweethearts Gianetta and Tessa, but neither couple is allowed to leave for their honeymoon, because there is a problem. They are informed that one of the bridegrooms is really the King of Barataria, but nobody knows which. Gianetta and Tessa are delighted with the idea of one of them being Queen, but upset when they are told that women are not allowed to accompany their husbands to Barataria and that they will have to stay behind in Venice
In a flight of the satirical whimsy so typical of G&S, two happy-go-lucky gondoliers discover that one of them is, in fact, heir to the throne of a distant kingdom. True to their (adopted) Republican roots, they set off together to rule in idealistic, if somewhat chaotic, style... Director Stuart Maunder, Artistic Director at State Opera South Australia, teams up with designer Dick Bird (The Mikado 2016) to stage a production that is fast, furious and full of fun.
After marrying their sweethearts Gianetta and Tessa, gondoliers Marco and Giuseppe learn that one of them is really the King of Barataria. But it's a mystery as to which one is which. The couples begin to fantasize about wealth and royalty, which brings about a delightful concoction of confusion, jealousy and true love. THE GONDOLIERS was the last successful collaborative work of Gilbert and Sullivan. This production was recorded at the Sydney Opera House.
Described as "a musical" approach to fairytale hilarity in Venice, Circa 1750", this splashy, colourful extravaganza involves two gondoliers who rules a Spanish Duchy on the assumption that one is a foundling prince. It's a perfect excuse to poke fun at republicanism and egalitarianism. Eric Donkin plays the campy and comical Duke of Plaza-Toro who has incorporated and sold himself as blue-chip stock; Douglas Chamberlain is in dag as the Duchess; Richard McMillan plays the leering and lecherous Grand Inquisitor, Don Alhambra. John Keane and Paul Massel are Marco and Giuseppe, the fun-loving gondoliers who discover on their wedding day that one of them is the rightful King of Barataria.
After gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, marry their sweethearts Gianetta and Tessa, they are informed that one of them is really the King of Barataria. However, there is a problem - nobody knows which is the King and which is the gondolier. Gianetta and Tessa are delighted with the idea of one of them being Queen, but later discover, to their horror, that the King was married, in babyhood, to somebody else - and that neither of them will be a queen.
