The Art Of Flight

We follow the philosophy student and yodeler Polkabjørn on his way to the ultimate yodel experiences, and to success. He and his musical companion "Kleine Heine" take their yodel act from the narrow fjords of Norway to huge stadium concerts, the world's leading throat expert, the Faroe Islands, Texas and Germany. We meet their enthusiastic manager, a male stripper and one of the biggest yodel fans in the world.

"The Art of Mezoued" tells the story of the life and work of the leading figures of the Tunisian Mezoued (popular song based on the bagpipes). It portrays its pioneers and its living actors, between consecrated stars, fallen stars and rising celebrities: Salah Farzit, Mostapha Gattel Essid, Hédi Donia, Abdelkarim Benzarti and Achraf.The film relates through interviews, testimonies and live concerts in wedding parties and in various places (cafes, cabarets, party room ... ), the dense, eventful and controversial history of the Tunisian popular song Mezoued, its rise and its crises, its musical components and its themes, its territories of deprivation and popular plebiscite, its official exclusion (until 1990) and its phenomenal success carried by popular musicians, with the appearance of "bad boys" and singular talent and by cult songs, sometimes deviant, sometimes protesting or simply funny, saucy and festive.

This movie short, entitled "The Art of Tajikistan", was produced by the Union of the Soviet Associations of Friendship and Cultural partnerships with the foreign countries, in association with the movie studio Tajikfilm in the 1970ies. It was directed by Boris Kimyagarov , and produced by his daughter Lilia Kimyagarova. The cameraman was Zaur Dachte. The film includes well-known artists such as the opera singer, Hanifa Mavlianova, ballet dancer Malika Sobirova, dancer and actress Gavhar Mirjumajeva, the singer Jurabek Murodov (background singing), and Allo Alaev. The film showcases the development of a multitude of applied, visual, and performance arts in Tajikistan, from the ancient times to the period contemporary with the movie's filming, ending with a display of the architecture of the moderns streets of Dushanbe.
