The idea for "BOOKCASE" came out of my desire to educate myself by creating a catalogue of film techniques. I was attempting to distill the elements of film to a pure state by stripping away any meaning from the images, to explore film as simply the masking and filtering of light. For subject matter I shot things which had, at one time or another, struck a chord within me. In doing so, I realized that I was also creating a catalogue of my own memories. I have always seen memories as discreet units of light, not unlike books on a shelf... "BOOKCASE" became not only an experiment in "pure" film, but a reflection on the concept of memory as well. Tracing his days starting out as a struggling artist and later involved as an AIDS activist, the video provides an intimate portrait of a neglected hero.

Inspired by a collection of personal notebooks, this feature-length director’s cut of the short film by the same name is an experimental documentary on art, AIDS and activism. Following James Wentzy from South Dakota to New York City, the film traces his days from struggling and surviving as an artist to later becoming an AIDS video activist. In showcasing a unique individual through his involvement with the fight against AIDS and his tireless frontline reportage of the crisis, The Books of James is an intimate portrait of a neglected everyman/hero and unearths a time now forgotten.

"Frances Steloff: Memoirs of a Bookseller" is a wonderfully dynamic portrait of an American cultural heroine. Now 100 years old, Frances Steloff was the founder and force behind the renowned Gotham Book Mart of New York City, a center for avant-garde literature and literati since 1920. She began with only $100 and thirty books and she modestly recalls her role in the bookstore's past.

The artwork exists in a hardware dump form, representing a digital excavation process, unearthing alternative ways of looking at written Arabic. One screen displays a computer adventure, a fictional quest in which the alphabet is "discovered" for the first time, from an isolated tree in a digital desert to outer space. By taking pixels as fundamental formation units, letters appear, and subsequently shatter or disappear. New possibilities, distorted letters and non-existent combinations emerge. The other screen displays interfaces of vintage computer programs: returning to the pioneering softwares in which Arabic appeared for the first time on the computer screen.
