Spectre

The impact of Marx on the 20th century has been all-pervasive and world-wide. This program looks at the man, at the roots of his philosophy, at the causes and explanations of his philosophical development, and at its most direct outcome: the failed Soviet Union.

Brocken Spectre' is about a man, his theatre troupe comprising mostly dwarfs and their journey to build a kinder and a more compassionate society.

Afflicted by various ailments and symptoms, François, Suzanne and Lorraine adapt or take refuge, challenged by the torments imposed by electrohypersensitivity.

A mysterious web of international shortwave radio towers once dominated the Tantramar marshlands near Sackville, New Brunswick. For almost 70 years the RCI shortwave towers broadcast around the world. Due to budget cuts, the site was decommissioned in 2012 and dismantled in 2014. Examining themes of identity and memory, the film captures images of the towers over four seasons in various weather conditions, accompanied by the voices of residents and technicians narrating accounts of hearing radio broadcasts emanate from their household appliances.

This movie depicts a pair of lovers, who were denied freedom of marriage during their lives, and after their deaths, they are transformed into mischievous ghosts. With their strange and unpredictable powers, they are able to frighten all the characters in the play. The bridegroom, the policeman, the dancers, etc., are all frightened by the ghosts. The only one who is lucky enough to meet them is Charlie, who makes a lot of jokes.

A self-assured journalist interviews a college student who believes that she's seen a ghost.

By using techniques such as direct manipulation and optical printing, this work was meamorphosed from found fotage originally existing as a documentary film on Ancient Greece to it's existing form. This short pieces is the result of an independent study with Jean Théberge as my advisor. My approach was to subject the original film to constant experimentation as would an archeologist, peeling and re-layering scenes by means of collage, referencing the original images under multiple layers of psychedelic imagery

A reaction to the seminal text by Swiss anthropologist Paul Wirz, Exorcism and the Art of Healing in Ceylon, this silent, high contrast, hand-processed film considers a history of colonialism and ethnographic practices in South Asia. The filmmakers restages a Sanni Yakuma healing ritual that was performed over a 12-hour period.

The Idomeni refugee camp housed people from the Middle East who were trying to cross the border into Europe. When the Greek police closed the camp, the refugees resisted and blocked a railway line used to deliver goods. Maria Kourkouta’s minimalist documentary not only observes these events but also presents carefully modeled static images that open up the space within and without the frame of view, and in the closing black-and-white sequence offers a poetic commentary. The result is a bleak portrait of a place where endless lines of refugees try to preserve the final remnants of their individual freedoms. “This film is a call to welcome the refugees that cross the European borders, as well as the ghosts that return with them.”

As part of the Spectre world tour, Laibach returned to the city after which it is named (Križanke 16. 5. 2014). The concert was clearly divided into three parts. In the first part, they presented material from the new album. With Milan Fras and Mina Špiler in the foreground and a recognizable animation in the background, the band replayed the new album and ended it with the song Whistleblowers. In the second part, they played some old songs from Brat moj through B Machina, Leben Tod to See that my grave and kept clean. For the third part or additions, they left Tanz mit Laibach and Das Spiel ist Aus. Laibach proved once again that they remain a young, agile and current band.
