A young man who grew up beneath the heavy shade of autocratic and avaricious mother, son Gregory, has lost initiative and the minimum footprint. The servility of his mother against his boss, which facilitates the solicitations of the latter to his sister, infuriates him. The fiancée, Soula, can not understand his sexual desires and his girlfriend, Julia, the only one that loves him really forced to abandon him. Gregory wonder with all this and rebels, but his rebellion brings him to the brink of madness. "City of Joel" is documentary - with unprecedented access - to a 1.1 square mile shtetl in the suburbs that is home to 22,000 members of an one of the most insular and orthodox Hasidic sects. We follow the battles they are waging to survive. Just 50 miles north of New York City, the Satmar sect has built Kiryas Joel as a religious haven where they can be fruitful, multiply and follow the 613 rules of the Talmud. But with some of the highest rates of marriage, birth and religious observance in the country, they have been almost too successful. Developers have come up with a plan to double the size of the village to keep up with this growth, but their neighbors fight back because they believe it will harm the environment and tilt the balance of political power.

This film is a sequel to Munk's Zezowate Szczescie and it's much the same, only more so. The film begins in a cinema, where the last scenes of Zezowate Szczescie are being shown. Born unlucky, a victim of the errors and distortions of Stalinism, he is released in 1956. He meets a politically feverish woman, her influential parents, and finally becomes the father of her child. But bad luck, or perhaps an unlucky era, will not let him forget.
