This film tells the story of Ozwathini, a remote rural community situated in the midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where people practice mixed farming and forestry on small plots between their homesteads. These activities provide subsistence and an income in an area where formal employment is virtually non-existent. The film explores the values, opportunities and challenges of living in a communal area in South Africa. It also contrasts this with the monoculture model of large scale commercial agriculture and questions why government support for such a sustainable, resilient and eco-friendly lifestyle is so hard to find. Its goal is to raise awareness around the need for infrastructure development and support in such areas to make them more supportive of people’s needs and aspirations

Relayed in this film is a certain sickness and fatigue I have experienced from living in a crowded city - a paranoia and crowding of the senses. However, more simply, it is a recognition of the anxiety and fluctuations of one’s mind - the human nature to feel trapped in a wide open space or calm in the face of danger.

Chorus girl Rosa Carillo (Carmel Myers) finds herself in dire straits when the troupe she works with is disbanded and her last fifty dollars is stolen. Artist Billy Leeds (Earl Rodney) offers to take care of her, but she's leery of his proposition. Instead she finds work with an Italian grocer, Tony Bonchi (Edwin August). One of the other ex-members of the troupe has Tony arrested on a trumped up charge. Rosa returns to Billy and offers herself to him if only he'll get Tony out of jail.

Many believe that if one dies in this city and is given the rites of cremation in its waters, Lord Shiva whispers the sacred chants in your ear that will release you from the karmic wheel of reincarnation. From these beliefs has sprung a local industry based on death, including wood bearers, death photographers, prostitutes, and an assortment of holy men well supplied with chillums of gunja. For many westerners the fascinating aspect of this Indian-Australian co-production (boasting ex-SAFC executive Defrim Isai as executive producer) will be the acceptance of death, and the way that it is stripped of the fear and grief that all too often attend it.
