Pixels of the Orient appropriates Western media depictions of East Asia for a psychedelic and comedic exploration of ahistorical East Asian aesthetics and identity. Western film and television depicts East Asian culture through a pastiche of Chinese and Japanese symbols—often mixed with other influences from across Asia—filtered through an Orientalist lens that associates this “Asianness” with the exotic and mysterious.

This is a project where I attempt to understand the complexity of remote gig platform work from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk and focuses on an intentionally hidden and opaque space of labour and platform politics. The research – which spanned over two years – asks questions about postcolonial techno-realities, to the invisibility of precarious labour, to infusing individual experiences into conversations around globalised interconnected algorithmic governance, and finding concrete situations where we can witness what this looks like.

In this work, Bell-Smith combines three found elements: an industrial video designed to fix stuck pixels in computer monitors, an animation of a sunset and a New Age soundtrack. In doing so Bell-Smith interrogates the purported transcendence of psychedelia and New Age techno-hippie-dom, while bringing into play the history of brainwashing videos and seizure-inducing strobe effects.
