For the past 60 years, a space-traveling smart-ass named Paul has been locked up in a top-secret military base, advising world leaders about his kind. But when he worries he’s outlived his usefulness and the dissection table is drawing uncomfortably close, Paul escapes on the first RV that passes by his compound in Area 51. Fortunately, it contains the two earthlings who are most likely to rescue and harbor an alien on the run.
Paul leaves his wealthy parents behind to go on a spiritual quest. He meets up with a pilgrim, leader of a vegetarian cult whose members survive by begging for food in uncomfortable robes. The religious fanatics draw the ire of local peasants when they are arrested for stealing eggs. Marianne is one of the followers, and she and Paul go to a remote island to live off seaweed and vegetation, but a development company moves in to wreck the paradise. Paul is brokenhearted when Mariane goes off with one of the greedy developers in this symbolic film that decries the allure of the material world.
Still in the aftermath of a tough break up, Paul's life is slowly deteriorating. A mindless burglary of his rented apartment forces him to to push through the underworld of Tel Aviv to investigate.
After 7 years spent in jail Paul is free again. With his old crew he celebrates his return.
There's a film subtitler. There's a film she must urgently subtitle. There's the plot of that film, with which she relates on a level that will remain enigmatic to us. And in that film within the film there's a main character, whose dreams are being devoured, and other characters, interested in dreams as well, but far more practical. And there¹s music, and a promise of music. Timelessly wandering through the world.
Paul is the true story of a young man who has been diagnosed with HIV. He lives alone and rarely ever goes outside. A local pastor, Father George, convinces him to go to his pregnant niece's house for dinner with her young family. After confronting his fears, he settles in and learns that there's life and love still to be lived.
Prolific documentarian Jan Soldat (For Fuck’s Sake, Christian, We’re Making a Porn Film) brings another very special, adults-only, sex-positive cinematic experience with this close-up character study of the eponymous Paul -an ordinary-seeming middle-aged man in his city-center apartment. This gentle, lovely fellow talks frankly about his life, work, and family in a simple, deep, and honest conversation. Empathetic humanism at its most direct.
