Meet the match made in pop heaven, when the singer-songwriter and the 1960s hitmaking composer collaborated on the 1998 album Painted From Memory, featuring the GRAMMY Award-winning song “I Still Have That Other Girl.” Their magical sessions were captured in this special episode of Sessions at West 54th, hosted by David Byrne.
With performances by Lyle Lovett, Natalie Merchant, Randy Newman and many other acclaimed musical artists, this best-of collection features highlights from the second season of the public television concert and interview series. Other artists in the spotlight include Lou Reed, Ozomatli, John Hiatt, Lucinda Williams, Elvis Costello with Burt Bacharach, Afro-Cuban All-Stars, Neil Finn, the Mavericks, Kronos Quartet and Steve Earle.
On his own, Neil Finn continues to purvey remarkable songcraft, music that's subtly irresistible. In performance, with Finn's ace band featuring his teenaged son, Liam, on guitar and drums, his music is yet more immediate, even more intense.
On June 9, 1997, Ben Folds Five was one of the first guests to appear on a new series called Sessions at West 54th. Because of the 1/2 hour time constraint of the show, only a handful of the recorded tracks made it to air. The DVD contains the entire performance which, for the most part, includes tracks from their just released album, Whatever and Ever Amen. The DVD includes Spare Reels, a 45 minute film which contains live performances and clips of the band in various and random situations. It also contains clips of Ben Folds Five during the studio sessions for their then upcoming album, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner.
Tori Amos performs. Her set includes "iieee," "Past the Mission," "Caught a Lite Sneeze" and "The Waitress." Hosted by David Byrne.
