My Kind of Family shows the family life of homosexual couples with their children, exposing the battles they face to become the family who already are in real life. The documentary brings to light problems experienced by them, ordinary people, victims of prejudice and discrimination. Summer. Half a day in the life of 10-year-old Mika, who lives in the countryside with his family in reduced circumstances. His father is very ill and is unable to handle the daily work on the farm. Questioning similarities and differences and cinematically seeking an impossible closeness - As an imagined dialogue between the filmmaker and his late father Ulrich Mühe, this film becomes an attempt to find answers to those questions that were not asked during his lifetime. A prologue and five chapters were assembled from found footage, in which accusation and attempted explanation, appeasement and reinforcement clash and oscillate between fiction and reality.

For its grandma's funeral, the child goes to its father's hometown. Facing the argument with his wife, the hostile relatives and his mother's death, the father cries before his child for the first time.
