My Best Friend

Three-part documentary series about the importance and nature of friendship among children, told from their point of view. Shot over eight months and told entirely from their perspective, it is an intimate and moving insight into how children think and feel as they journey into a new world.

Sam's best friend Roxanne is determined to capture footage of a ghost on videotape, and drags Sam along with her on a visit to the local "haunted house". However, things become spooky when it appears they have found a real ghost.

Lydia and Sam like to make haunted houses, imagine other worlds, and question everything, but they never thought one of their creations would be able to push itself into their comfortable, isolated existence. Now, Lydia must deal with authority, confusion, and generational violence to solve the mysteries of reality, and save her own.

Jewish people - and a few Gentiles - muse on what it means to be Jewish in 1960s Britain. The challenges of maintaining faith and culture outside Israel, and in a society where ‘Jewish’ and ‘English’ are seen as mutually exclusive identities are perceptively explored in this astute documentary. Some secular Jews are keen to distance themselves from traditional Judaism and especially Zionism (one defines himself simply as a Marxist). Gentiles are on hand to cheerfully perpetuate some of the old stereotypes, and we’re treated to colourful snapshots of the Jewish community in London: the rag trade, a kosher butcher and restaurant.

In pursuit of career, parents prefer to leave the joint family to live in a nuclear family. A ten-year-old child knocks on the door of court against his own parents.
