He attended the one-class village school in Kukowken and the grammar schools in Lyck and Königsberg. He graduated from the Technical University of Gdansk with a degree in engineering. From 1937 he was employed as a construction foreman at Strabag Bau-AG Berlin for the construction of freeways and airfields. From 1957 he was a lecturer at the engineering school in Lage/Lippe and later co-founder of the Lippe University of Applied Sciences. He and his wife Lilly died in Detmold in November 2001.
