Land

American resort developers bear down on the wild west coast of Nicaragua, hoping to build the next tourist paradise. With lax labour and environmental regulations, some of the developers take full advantage of the situation, and the local fishermen start accusing them of exploitation and land thievery. Unexpectedly, in the midst of this conflict, firebrand Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas sweep back into government, boldly empowering the local fishermen. The tables turn viciously on the American developers, who get much more than they bargained for. But when the local fishermen, corrupted by new found power, begin acting in the same manner as the American developers, questions are posed about human nature, morality, and ethics on a much larger scale.

Mobile Land is an island where vehicles live. Carl arrives on the island and starts working as a delivery boy. He delivers packages to all kinds of vehicles. Ruster sometime gets in the way and is always trying to turn everyone into rust, but Carl works hard at his deliveries.

Zhang Neng Liang is a fuerdai (second generation rich) who fails the university entrance exams and joins the People’s Liberation Army as a member of the tank crew. Squad leader Niu Nul Li comes from a rural village, and missed out on a place in the military academy twice due to Zhang Neng Liang. They start off on the wrong foot, though eventually become fast friends after being allocated to the same team. The pair are joined by sole female crew member Ye Xiao Meng, an earnest tomboy who becomes the army’s first female tank driver.

An island at night becomes the scene where different characters meet. A militant young girl is rescued unintentionally by a drunken man, somewhere between fantasy and reality.

The film inspired by the landscape of Friesland, the north part of Netherlands. The flatness of horizon, the history of fought with water suggests us a sense of "Wall" between human and nature.

My ancestors settled on a homestead called Nes along the Icelandic River in Manitoba. This land was an unmarked graveyard for approximately 80 Icelanders who died of smallpox within the first years of settlement: 1875-76. Upon visiting this site for the first time this summer 2006, I was surprised to have direct encounters with unearthed graves and bones that were gradually being dragged to the basin of the river. The imagery in Land is as a result of this serendipitous connection with history resurfacing.

LAND is a fluid series of formal land animation experiments based upon the imprint of landscapes in various locations and intuitive interpretations of those movements. It is notable for its casting director Fred Roos, who later became a producer for Francis Ford Coppola. Roos discovered counterculture sketch group The Committee in San Francisco and cast all members in bit parts in Hey, Landlord.
