A secret agent is summoned by the head of a counter espionage organization, to Trieste where he is to unmask a potential enemy operating in Venice.

Mr. Slimami is an Algerian retiree living in Paris who witnesses a murder while taking a walk one evening. He's spotted by the assailant, but Slimami manages to slip away before being caught. The victim turned out to be a prominent businessman, and police are soon searching for the witness as well as the killers. Slimami does not want to step forward, both as a matter of personal safety and because he prefers to let the French police handle their own affairs. His son Alilou, a budding journalist, openly decries the failure of the witness to come forward as a black mark on the Muslim community in Paris, unaware that the man in question is his father.

Jean-Louis, Danielle's fiancé, a nurse, becomes blind following an explosion in the mine where he works. Coming from Lyon, Doctor Coudray, whose natural son Gilbert - who loves Danielle - dies while helping his father threatened by the person responsible for Jean-Louis' accident, will work to restore his sight.

As night falls, creatures with pearl and lace ornaments gather at the center of the forest where lies an inanimate body.

The beaches of Saint-Jean-de-Monts, a small coastal region of the French Loire, fill up with tourists in summer. But when fall arrives, its great hotels and luxurious spa-resorts become deserted. A situation which Leo takes advantage of to live far away from everything and everybody.

There is a cable suspended between the machine and the void, between the snow-groomer and the slope, between Guillaume and his thoughts. Every winter night, Guillaume crosses the ski-runs and the mountain to repack the snow. Alone in his cabin, he is at one with his machine in a balance composed of ceaselessly repeated comings and goings. He has to cling to the night, to its grey areas, invent his path.

In La Nuit du Phoque ("The Night of the Seal") they "decided to try everything imaginable"; the 41 minutes are packed to the brim with wild and utterly incomprehensible visual and textual shifts, including special effects, graphic but sensual love scenes, a hilarious Busby Berkeley-style "revolutionary ballet", a superb avant-garde gay cabaret number sung by Philippe Danton – imagine a cross between Rocky Horror and the Trout Mask era Magic Band – and any number of absurd cameos (I particularly like the surprise appearance of Sir Isaac Newton, who scares the shit out of some kids playing in a local park). As a period piece La Nuit du Phoque is unbeatable, and it alone would make an impressive bonus.
