We enter the space through an Ilm-al-Raml tablet, a 7th-century Islamic method of divination, with the question “Where are the female prophets?” In the House of Fire follows the narrator’s story, her experience with mysticism and poetry, and the drive behind her anonymous facebook page Avaz-e-Eshgh (Songs of Love).
“Boston! How ‘ah are ya doin' tonight?!” she asked in a Welsh accent. “Thank you so much for being a part of this show. It’s nice to be greeted by a warm audience, and you always have been, so thank you!” Her show was split into three acts, representing her three studio albums in the order they were released: Family Jewels, Electra Heart, and Froot. Every time she began a new song the audience would erupt in cheers, singing along so loudly that at times they drowned out Marina’s voice. Songs like “Primadonna” and “How to Be a Heartbreaker” generated massive cheers and a push towards the security gate, causing nearby security staff to flinch and move in towards the stage.

It was an address that would become infamous. 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester. Home to jobbing builder Fred West, his wife Rose and an assortment of mutilated corpses. During the sixteen gruesome years until 1987, the couple brutally, sadistically and cruelly murdered the victims, including their own children. Sex obsessed Rose sold her body and bedded her lodgers while Fred, a modern day Marquis de Sade, tortured and raped then dug and buried, dismembering bodies to try preventing identification should they be found. Together they trawled the streets looking for new fodder to satisfy their warped lusts. Finally, a chance remark led to the evil being uncovered. Fred delivered himself to the Devil but the law decreed Rose should wait for her reunion with her monster husband.
Kharkiv, the 1930s. The heyday of Ukrainian art. Ambitious young poet Vladimir Akimov happily settles in at the new luxury "Slovo" House built specifically for artists. He comes from the provinces and works as a proof-reader in a printing press, and has never even dreamed of living under one roof with prominent Ukrainian writers and artists. He thinks his own poetry is genius, but nobody takes his literary efforts seriously, not to mention the occasional chuckles over his epigone poems. But fate smiles at him. The head of the political intelligence agency suggests that he become the author of a play written earlier. Akimov agrees, signing a non- disclosure note. The poet has no idea what price he will pay for this success. “‘Slovo’ House” is a story about a generation of Ukrainian artists persecuted by the totalitarian system, unfolding against the backdrop of one of the largest genocides of the 20th century: the Holodomor, which caused the death of almost 7 million people.

The Self Cleaning House is a patented invention by Francis Gabe of Newberg, Oregon, USA. The house has been widely celebrated and recognized as an accomplishment for women’s role in science and as a clever method to liberate women from housework. It was even partially reconstructed in the Women’s Museum in Dallas, Texas. When I visited the prototype that Francis Gabe was still occupying in 2007, I discovered that the actual realization of the invention idea was a minor disaster. It was cluttered and hazardous, which made it difficult to believe that the home had ever been a working invention. In this video, 3D rendered environments were constructed to create the fantasy version of the Self Cleaning House as a fully functional home, based on the ideas laid out in its patent. There is an odd disparity between the importance of The Self Cleaning House as a concept, versus its condition in reality.
