A middle aged worker does all he can to provide his wife and daughter with good living conditions. They are ungrateful and do not return his affections. When he has an accident at work and goes home in the afternoon, he finds the time to think about how to solve the communication problems in his family. This takes however an unforeseen route.

The Happy Cow ”is a documentary about the love and concern of a human being for animals. At the same time, it is a story about a person's great sacrifices and the stubborn struggle to maintain a lifestyle and culture that are irrevocably about to disappear. Rune has chosen to stay out of EU regulations. He refuses to fill out forms and refuses to mark his cows with yellow plastic markings in their ears. Therefore, he cannot even deliver his milk to the dairy. Some of the milk is given to the calves, but most of it ends up in the manure pile. Thousands of litres of milk are thrown away every year.

Øjvind, a smallholder's boy, is a close friend with Marit, a farmer's girl, throughout their entire childhood. As an adolescent he one day recognizes that she has become a maiden, and that he has fallen in love with her. When he sees Marit dancing with Jon Halten, a farmer's son, he gets sad, and notices that when you start loving someone, you are not cheerful any more. He senses the social distance between himself and Marit, and tries to compensate this by becoming the best pupil in the village. Øjvind wants to study at an agricultural college, and the old schoolmaster helps him to arrange this. When he some years later returns to the village as an agronomist, he and Marit resume their romance. Because of their different social status Marit's grandfather, Ola Nordistua, tries to stop the liaison. With new agricultural methods Øjvind helps his father to get better harvests. At the same time the old Ola Nordistua sees his farm going downhill as no one really cares for it.

By alternating documentary with fiction, a portrait is drawn of Peter van Straaten, eminent draughtsman of political cartoons, the long-term Parool serial Agnes and a countless series of painfully comical sketches of everyday life. Interviews with Van Straaten - outside, at home and at work - smoothly merge with dramatised excerpts from Agnes (played by people like Renée Fokker, Pierre Bokma and Hans Kesting). 'That's me, dressed up as a woman', he says about this creation. The camera peeks over his shoulder when Van Straaten makes his black-and-white drawings with pen and ink. His humour is harsh; he draws people in all their spinelessness, sadness and dishonesty, with a remarkable eye to facial expressions and postures. Through his drawings and stories, he also talks about his personal experiences with alcohol, relationships, family, health and sex - and his lifelong love for birds in the open field.

Hossam is an accountant at El Mellawany factory, manipulating the accounts with the factory manager Shawki for embezzling the funds, appointing Adel in the factory and discovering the deviation of his friend Hassan.
