On September 5th, 2014, The Head and The Heart played to a sold-out crowd at Berkeley’s historic Greek Theatre. The band played crowd favorites off their two albums, The Head and the Heart and Let’s Be Still, opening with “Cats and Dogs” to roaring applause. Right from the opening notes of the first song, the audience was hooked, singing along with the band and with each other. The enthusiasm carried over into “Sounds Like Hallelujah,” “Shake,” and “Lost In My Mind,” while the whole crowd sang along to the heartfelt “Rivers and Roads”. As the evening concluded with “Down in the Valley,” the audience was embracing each other in arms, swaying back and forth. The nearly full moon shone bright on the crowd, and all was well at The Greek. The first Greek experiments in stone sculpture and architecture owed much to Egypt. But in quick order the Greeks set off in their own direction, looking for the perfect set of proportions to represent the perfect human body and the perfect temple. The Greek victories over the Persians in the 5th century BC infused the Greeks with a new belief in the superiority of their way of life. And this was reflected in their art.

Through commerce and conquests the Romans had come into contact with Greek art early in their cultural development. The Romans took what they found pleasing from Greek art and adapted it to Roman purposes in sculpture and architecture. But with the discovery of cement, the Romans were soon able to build structures beyond the dreams of even the Greeks. A 75-minute lecture.

Invocation originated as a sequence within the documentary Orpheus Through the Ages made by Pelicula Films to accompany Orpheus and Eurydice. It was designed to illustrate the Ancient Greek myth of the Creation of the world. It was shot on 16mm and subsequently enlarged onto 35mm for festival screenings. The techniques employed were a test run for those which ultimately were used within Ra; the Path of the Sun God. Two versions exist; one with narration and one without.

Richard Fontaine and Bob Miser started the current exploration of the male nude in film and photography. The two shared ideas props and models and reinvented some of the sexual icons that we all still recognise today. The gladiator the sailor, the cowboy… Starting with posing-straps and graduating to nudes their "art studies" enlisted the talents of up-and-coming actors and bodybuilders. This film recalls that era.

This video work forms part of a broader attempt to re-envision Irish cultural history in order to better understand the Now, to follow repressed lines of development that, if pursued, might have led Ireland out of its insular tendencies much earlier. The life and works of Irish writer Stephen MacKenna (1872-1934) form the documentary material on which the piece is built. MacKenna is best known for his translation from Ancient Greek of Third century philosopher Plotinus.
