Chemical Brothers brought the Other Stage to a rousing finale on the last night of Glastonbury Festival (June 24). The Glastonbury veterans and former Pyramid Stage headliners returned to their spiritual home to round off the festival opposite The Who. Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons provided the muddy but jubilant Other Stage crowd with a thrill-packed show which married spectacular visuals to a set packed from the greatest hits, which climaxed with 'Dig Your Own Hole' classic 'Elektrobank'.

Much to the dismay of music fans everywhere, Glastonbury was cancelled for the second year running in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, that doesn’t mean that there wouldn’t be any performances at all, and instead organisers Michael and Emily Eavis organised a virtual event from the site in Pilton, Somerset. Filmed across Worthy Farm including at iconic locations such as the Pyramid Field and the Stone Circle, the livestream took place in May 2021 and supported Glastonbury’s three main charitable partners Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid, as well as helping to secure the festival’s return in 2022.

The Chemical Brothers' regular visual collaborator Adam Smith stood in for bandmember Ed Simons on-stage at Glastonbury on Sunday night during their headline set on the Other Stage, operating the new visuals he's created for the show with partner Marcus Lyall. The new visuals combine lighting and projection installations with the visceral raw energy of an acid house warehouse rave - and one of Smith and Lyall's visuals, for the new track Under Neon Lights, featuring St. Vincent, has now been released on YouTube. Adam Smith - director of videos for The Streets, Jamie T and others, and on TV and film drama – has been creating visuals for Rowlands and Simons, originally as half of Vegetable Vision, since the Nineties. He described the new Chemical Brothers show as “a truly unique, immersive psychedelic experience. Our aim is to fully capture the spirit of the music in the incredible new Chemical Brothers live set.”

Along with the Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, and other fellow acts, they were pioneers at bringing the big beat genre to the forefront of pop culture. They achieved widespread success when their second album Dig Your Own Hole topped the UK charts in 1997. In the United Kingdom they have had six number one albums and thirteen Top Twenty singles, including two number ones.

It feels like all of the 170,000 party-minded people of Glastonbury have descended on the John Peel Stage tonight. OK, so our grasp of crowd estimation is probably well off the mark, but there really are thousands upon thousands of punters who’ve trekked up to the site’s northern-most stage this evening for The Streets‘ headline set. People are positively pouring out of the sides of the tent and craning their necks to get a glimpse of Birmingham’s finest, Mike Skinner, for the much-loved stage’s final performance of the weekend.
