A collage of two-dimensional images of vegetation, each appearing only for a moment, sometimes as a single image, more often with other bits of stem, leaf, bud, or petal. Often we see only the outline of objects against a black background. Black and green are occasionally joined by fragments of orange or of white and blue. The objects in the frame don't move but they are quickly replaced by another collage, giving the feel of rapid motion. A visual duet consisting of a 16mm film and a 16mm photogram self-portrait collage. It is inspired by earthly pleasures and wonders as revealed in the vibrant marvels of Stan Brakhage's cinema and in the central panel of the 1504 triptych by Hieronymous Bosch titled “The Garden of Earthly Delights.”

For Garden of Earthly Delights (2016), Zhou collaborated with a puppet-theater troupe from Taishun. Set between the idyllic landscape of south Zhejiang and its decaying industrial zones, the film’s voiceover adapts the quotations of Zhuangzi, whose paradoxes are prompts to philosophical speculation. The marionette figures allude to the Daoist myth of the Eight Immortals as well as the eponymous hellscape by Dutch Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch, who also lends a title to Ship of Fools (2018). In this sculptural installation the eight immortals from The Garden of Earthly Delights are presented on their passage across the sea. A motor shakes the boat, though whether its passengers are in the grip of divine revelation, delirium, or madness is left to the viewer to decide.
