From Where I Sit

The lifeless body of a woman lies on the floor of a room. A man stands, observing it. Beyond the locked door someone tries to get in: it's a 10 year old child. The three are a family, or what's left of it. What to do with the kid?

A trip down memory lane as a filmmaker looks back at the past that has been chasing her onto the present. She enlists the help of her cousins, with whom she grew up with, to provide the lens with which she could look at her own past in the eye, hoping that in some way, she could finally stop running.

During an imaginary actors exam, in order to choose the best, the jury utilizes immoral ways of selection – spying, making conflicts, humiliating the applicants – in short, taking advantage of its power.

Filmmaker Nouf Aljowaysir found it impossible to give a clear answer to the question “where are you from?” since she was 13, when she went to live in the US. She was born in Saudi Arabia; her family originally came from Iraq. These are not just places you can point to on a map, search for on Google or look up in Wikipedia. They are also personal memories, smells, family ties and things that simply can’t be explained in a single sentence.

In the last three years, more than 29 thousand pharmacies have been opened in Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro, there is one pharmacy for every 2.6 thousand inhabitants. In the Laranjeiras neighborhood, when bakeries, cafeterias, bookstores, beauty salons close, The question arises: will it become a pharmacy? "how pharmacies are born" is a video poem about this recent phenomenon of transformation of the urban landscape and the affective memories we cultivate in our surroundings.

Documents, family stories and of course the British staple of tea and biscuits help her figure out a way to reply. A personal look at questions of identity, at a time where migration, political isolation and reclaiming history are hot topics. Is it important to look to your own past in order to better respond to wider issues present today?
