Like many, throughout 2020 Chinese-born, US-based filmmaker Zhengfan Yang (Where Are You Going, IFFR 2016) looked closer at his immediate surroundings. From his apartment complex in Chicago, the filmmaker records ostensibly quotidian scenes: people walking, window cleaners, street sweepers; life viewed from inside a bubble.
short film about women responding to questions of love
Individuals with "enhanced powers" nicknamed Capes by the media roam the city streets bringing justice, or so the news would lead the public to believe. Former news cameraman and reporter Clive has made it a personal vendetta to prove to the public how bad these capes are. When his former fiance and reporter colleague Barbara asks him to help her continue to falsify the news reports, tempers rise and past events come to light that some would rather keep hidden.
*Footnote deals with the space of fantasy in collapse, broken or made untenable by repeated attempts to realise its forms in reality. An Eros figure is confined to a small attic room, the sound of fluttering wings is modulated by stray radio waves of international news… A single-horned figure charges the lens of the camera in a gradually more enfeebled and frustrated act… The artist talks in an everyday fashion about the Egyptian Book of the Dead.

The fragile balance that has kept their personal relationship almost intact is broken in an unexpected way by a simple phone call.

The video piece “Footnote #02: Hietämäki” seeks to reflect on the object “car”: a golden car is parked somewhere in the dark, the wind is shaking the surrounding bushes. Besides that, not much is happening. The viewers are left entirely to their own projections into the scenery, accompanied by a minimal soundtrack by Carsten Nicolai and Mika Vainio.
A couple argues, a lethal twist of past and future plays out in ordinary lives. Adapted from Arthur Rimbaud’s enigmatic poems War and Fragments of Folio 12, this new interpretation of the poems offers a stark warning to an age where time – fragmented, decontextualised and stored as optical or auditory data – accumulates, while memory fades.
A dreamy fragment about the end of the world. A black girl wanders into a Hollywood western and mourns for the dead.
A series of shots in a California desert landscape in which there is a play between on frame and off frame, sound and image. There is an effort to create the space of a story, without a story, by the use of real time/diegetic sound. Love is felt as a force that determines the arrangement of the figures in the landscape.
This film tells the story of Ozwathini, a remote rural community situated in the midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, where people practice mixed farming and forestry on small plots between their homesteads. These activities provide subsistence and an income in an area where formal employment is virtually non-existent. The film explores the values, opportunities and challenges of living in a communal area in South Africa. It also contrasts this with the monoculture model of large scale commercial agriculture and questions why government support for such a sustainable, resilient and eco-friendly lifestyle is so hard to find. Its goal is to raise awareness around the need for infrastructure development and support in such areas to make them more supportive of people’s needs and aspirations
In New York, a distraught woman sits in her rented room in a rocking chair. Outside, people shop and engage in commerce, men light pipes, hands type. A mother and baby play peek-a-boo: things are okay for many. The woman continues to rock. A drunk is arrested; a Salvation Army band plays, kids run around. Protesting unemployed workers appear. The rocking woman's face becomes more distorted. Military officers parade. A man picks through discarded clothes, hobos sit listless. These men are veterans of the Great War, now forgotten, many alcoholic. Passersby ignore men passed out on sidewalks. The woman stops rocking and takes action.
