Jack: A Flash Fantasy is a rock opera produced by the CBC. Jack dealt with a deck of cards, with lots of Jacks (and Jills). Jack was the jack of hearts (with a full, trusting heart), Jill (Gilda) owned a cow, named moo, "because even though the cow laughed and cried and talked and shouted, it all came out as, MOO!" Jack and Jill are taken advantage of by the Jack of Spades. Different musical styles are portrayed by the different characters.
Made a year before the Emergency, Flashback was commissioned by Films Division to commemorate its 25th anniversary. Sastry, with his ever-surprising style, turns this ‘history of’ film into a joyous mix, bringing archival film footage, documentation of Films Division’s infrastructure, and the musings of John Grierson, Ezra Mir, S Sukhdev and himself together, to tussle with the role of documentary cinema. Today, the unprecedented access to archives like that of Films Division is an open invitation to ‘flashback’ and reassemble the past.

"At the beginning and end of each roll of 16mm I shot a small part of the film is exposed to light because of the insertion and removal of the spool of film. Oftentimes images are obscured by light flashes. I saved many of these short segments when filming and living in Chicago. All of these are spliced together creating a visual diary of my time spent there with my wife Susan. The time period was from 1971-1979. Most of the imagery is from our Chicago days with a couple of scenes from San Francisco. Since the images are flashes and this is a look backward, I titled this short Flashbacks." --DA.
