"Fire Fly EYE" is my response to the devastating re-making of the world brought on by anthropogenic climate change and corporate "stewardship" of our natural resources. A ritual of reclamation in the face of overwhelming destruction, invoked through filming discarded consumer products, sifting spectacle out of catastrophe. -K.L.

Like the Academy Award nominated film BOYHOOD, this family movie is "a 10-year moving epic." It follows an orphaned 6-year old boy who lands at a halfway house in Northern Virginia, thrives in nine foster homes, and ultimately becomes the 16-year old young man who wants to serve in the US military. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Grammy Award–winning jazz musician and composer Terence Blanchard’s adaptation of Charles M. Blow’s moving memoir, which The New York Times praised after its 2019 world premiere at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as “bold and affecting” and “subtly powerful.” The first opera by a Black composer presented on the Met stage and featuring a libretto by filmmaker Kasi Lemmons, the opera tells a poignant and profound story about a young man’s journey to overcome a life of trauma and hardship. James Robinson and Camille A. Brown—two of the creators of the Met’s sensational recent production of Porgy and Bess—co-direct this new staging, which appears in cinemas on October 23. Baritone Will Liverman, one of opera’s most exciting young artists, stars as Charles, alongside sopranos Angel Blue as Destiny/Loneliness/Greta and Latonia Moore as Billie.

Through powerful testimonies, this film looks into how gender identities are negotiated during the time of conflict and violence.

The film stars the adorable Dominic, the 3 year old brother of Dean. Dad and Mom helped out. It's a simple narrative. A 3 year old gets a call. So he suits up in his Fireman suit and rushes to a fire to save the day. The soundtrack was Dean's avant-garde vision using Garage Band. Granted, it's not the easiest thing to listen to -- you can always turn down the volume.

“Song of the Firefly” is a visual poem which utilizes the camera-less photogram technique that was introduced in Pruska-Oldenhof's 2001 film “Light Magic.” “Song of the Firefly” transports the viewer to an open field on a warm summer night, where the luminous dance of the fireflies can be experienced. The exhuberant display of light, as each flash illuminates different portions of the field, reveals fragments of the space in which we are contained, leaving us always waiting in anticipation to see more.
