The narration—interrupted by the soundtrack of Alfred E. Green's 1948 western Four Faces West—describes a 19th century photograph by Timothy O’Sullivan, titled Historic Spanish Record of the Conquest. The photograph is slightly out of focus, pinned against a bluish wall, and flaps in response to the occasional wind of a droning fan. And there’s bit of sunlight, reflected against a map of the West Indies.

The footage is composed of detailed close-ups of the reel-to-reel recorder as it plays back a song from Steve Bates’ latest release, All The Things That Happen (Constellation Records). The introduction plays back an old country & western song that was on one of the tape reels acquired with the recorder from the family of a deceased gentleman living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Once the video shoot was complete, the reel never worked again.

Samon Kamiyama, a skilled yoriki under Toyama Saemon-no-jō Kagemoto is feared and known to the villains as “Samon from the Hell.” Samon suspects that the drowning incident at the raw silk wholesaler Shinano-ya was the work of Maruya Rihei, a kimono wholesaler favored by the Ōoku, but has no evidence to prove his allegation. The elder Arao Tsushima-no-kami who is colluding with Maruya plan on building a gold mine on an uninhabited island using prisoners. Arao gives the supervision charge to Samon, who along with his comrades and Horikawa takes up his post on the island but is attacked by assassins one after another.

Also shown is the Chile of Augusto Pinochet and Salvador Allende. When Littin returned to Spain and finished his work, Gabriel Garcia Marquez set out to write the story of the film, published under the title Clandestine in Chile: the Adventures of Miguel Littin, which quickly became a best seller.
