Invited to shoot the cover for their 1972 album Exile on Main St., Robert Frank developed a relationship with the Rolling Stones that extended beyond Cocksucker Blues to include this Super 8 short, a jittery montage of the band slumming on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles and gadding about in Mick Jagger’s rented Bel-Air mansion that Frank wryly contrasted with images of poor Black street buskers on the Bowery. Graphic designer John Van Hamersveld ended up using still images and film strips from the Super 8 footage to create collages for the album’s back cover and inner sleeves; the original material is on view in the exhibition Life Dances On. — Museum of Modern Art

Last year saw the debut of the Super Strong Style 16 tournament in PROGRESS – a two-day, 16-man tournament with the winner getting a shot at the championship at the end of it. With this year’s SSS16 tournament coming up next week, it’s time to go back and do a #BACKFILL for last year’s two-day tournament… This was the spiritual follow-up to 2014’s World Cup show, which worked well because the football World Cup took place at around that time as well. Entrants into the inaugural tournament included the likes of Will Ospreay, Mark Haskins, Marty Scurll and Zack Sabre Jr, with fly-ins limited to Tommaso Ciampa and Roderick Strong. The show opened with a montage of fans saying who they thought would win, before the pre-show amble featured the return of Kris Travis to say a few words to the Camden faithful.
After a knock-out show with day one of the Super Strong Style 16 tournament, PROGRESS wrapped up the second half of their first ever double header with a ten-match strong card that also featured the first ever women’s match on a main chapter show. Let’s get to it with another edition of #BACKFILL… Just as a head’s up – day one weighed in at three and a half hours, with day two being over four hours long. Just in case you’re going to block out time to watch either or both of these shows! The second day started with a cool highlight package set to Rammstein’s “Sonne”, showing clips of each match from the first night – a fine way to sum up day one!
