The feature-length feature documentary combined with animation is inspired by the famous collection of short stories by the Czech writer and poet Jan Neruda (July 9, 1834 - August 22, 1891). She returns to the Lesser Town of Prague to confront her current state with the spirit of the place in a collage of speeches and often tragicomic scenes, which is stored deep in the Czech subconscious thanks to school reading. Thanks to this, the film is not just about memory, but grows into an image of social changes inscribed in old houses. Samples from the films were used: A Week in a Quiet House (dir. Jiří Krejčík, 1947), The Morality of Mrs. Dulská (dir. Jiří Krejčík, 1958), A Story of Love and Honor (dir. Otakar Vávra, 1977).

A “reading film” of delirious image and text, Les chants de Maldoror takes its title and inspiration from Comte de Lautréamont’s 1869 proto-Surrealist poetic novel which, for instance, describes beauty as the chance encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on an operating table. In the novel’s six cantos, a young misanthrope indulges in depraved and destructive acts. Unexpected encounters abound, with turtles and birds joining Terayama’s regular cast of snails and dogs to wander over books and bare torsos. Feverish video processing posterizes, inverts and overlays images that are further colored by sound—pushing the limits of his literary adaptation. Terayama wrote that the only tombstone he wanted was his words, but, as Les chants de Maldoror demonstrates, words need not be confined to carved monuments or bound hardcopies.

To attain knowledge, man and woman had to be willing to give up their innocence," says Boris Lehman. Life Lesson is a poetic and philosophic reflection on the theme of paradise lost. Some fifty persons illustrate the planet's convulsions and the world's vacillations. Trying to communicate, to commune with the invisible, they cry out, sing out, give out messages, each in their own way, in their own state of solitude. These are like multiple echoes that resemble waves in the water or stars in the sky. " Behind these images and sounds that have been stifled by today's society, Lehman hunts for noises, cries, songs, messages that go astray. He says that if we look at the invisible we may hear the words. He invites us to look beyond the appearances of social life and to vibrate in tune with life's polyphony that is all around us."
