A woman dressed as a Spanish dancer enters from the wings, camera right, and starts to dance. Her dancing consists of a series of high kicks, followed by a routine of handsprings, splits, and some contortionist positions. At the end, she takes a bow.

A man holding a heavy watering can walks along a path that feels almost too long and somehow strange. Passing through a place where there are kisses yet also sighs, the camera finds the beings that offer a kind of consolation to humans who have no strength before life and death.

Nellie is a seemingly prim young woman who is conducting a clandestine affair with Jack, a super-suave, fast-talking lawyer. It doesn't matter that the pair seems mismatched because Jack doesn't really exist; he is a figment of Nellie’s imagination--someone she dreamed up out of bits and pieces of Leonard, a somewhat bland man with whom she had a blind date months earlier. Meanwhile, we meet Leonard, and learn that he too has an imaginary lover, whom he has fashioned after the attractive attributes of Nellie. When the two characters come together again, they are forced to compare and contrast their ideal—but, sadly, nonexistent--partners, with their flesh and blood counterparts. The question is, will Nellie choose the man on her mind over the man in her arms?

Smith & Smith, publishers, in a letter, notify Professor Bernard that they will accept his latest story if he will alter the enclosed paragraph: "Marry me and I will do away with my wife as I did her father." The absent-minded professor leaves this paragraph on his study table while he goes to the store to secure some cloth for his wife. The Professor, however, is very absent-minded, and forgets his mission when he meets a group of firemen who induce him to play a game of checkers. In the meantime, Ellen, the cook, is having her troubles with the butcher boy, who brings liver instead of chops, as ordered.
