It is the end of the Meiji Era. The genius poet Ishikawa Takuboku, who’s struggling financially, starts a detective business out of his lodging in response to a certain murder case. He calls it the Woodpecker Detective’s Office. “The ghosts of the Twelve-Story Tower in Asakusa,” “the man-eating figure who wanders the streets on snowy nights”… Takuboku involves himself in one bizarre case after another with his hometown acquaintance, Kindaichi Kyosuke, as his assistant. Other literary men such as Nomura Kodo, Yoshii Isamu, Hagiwara Sakutaro, and Wakayama Bokusui are also dragged into Takuboku’s exploits as he races all around Tokyo at the height of Westernization!

Woods of Terror is a double bill of horror containing 'Nightmare in the Woods' & 'Zombie Village'. Nightmare in the Woods tells the story of three youths who decide to go deep into the woods to get high and tell silly horror stories to scare each other, but the story of the crazed killer stalking and killing young loving couples is true, and one by one he is coming to them to cut chop and decapitate! Zombie Village tells the story of a crazy person who has to stop the living dead from devouring his precious little village, but is he worse than the zombies.

Three thugs decide to kidnap two rich girls to get rich. After kidnapping the girls, they flee to the woods to avoid detection and until the ransom is paid. The girls try to warn the men that there is something in the woods, but they don't listen. The force in the woods comes alive and one by one, they each fight for their lives.

Hairy and rowdy creatures called rolleys sail to a land inhabited by more peace-loving elves. When the rolleys arrive to the elf village, they scare the elves away and settle down in the village. One of the elves, Milli, a brave elf girl, returns to the village to make a peace with the rolleys. The rolleys do not warm to Milli's peace proposal, but she becomes friends with a rolley called Rölli. It becomes their mission to solve the conflict between the elves and the rolleys.
