If a violin was actually broken here we don't get to see it. Sadly this is one of many Georges Melies films that are only available in a fragment. Hopefully one day a complete print will turn up but until then at least we have this. The film starts off in some sort of bakery as the boss starts giving orders and then a bit later we see a young man pull out a violin he has been hiding and start to play it. The film then flashes to another location but this is where it cuts off so I'm not certain where the story went from here.
While lullabies – with their intimate relationship between a mother and her child – are a universal musical genre, the polyphonic singing of lullabies by choirs is very rare. In Georgia (South Caucasus), men’s choirs have been singing lullabies on stage since at least the end of the 19th century, as the movement of national liberation from the Russian empire favored the affirmation of the Georgian cultural uniqueness. Polyphonic cradlesongs performed by men’s, women’s or mixed choirs in the different regional styles have become a new musical genre added to the repertoire of traditional national folklore. Individual as well as choral lullabies are called Nana.

‘It’s springtime’, a little bird stealing the filaments of my window screen reminded me this morning. ‘The sun in shining, the sky is blue, the trees are blossoming pink flowers and there is a wide world to be explored…what are you doing indoors?’ This 2002 video by artist Pipilotti Rist seems to be proposing a similar criticism in her reframing of concepts of time, season and the human lifespan.
The film director’s message addresses the modern world’s vital problem of loss of consideration for an individual man, who is an object requiring global-scale compassion and contemplation. The scenes that were made in a pseudo-documentary manner of the rebellious 1970’s remind of medieval Pieta exalting self-sacrificingness, pain, suffering and religious ecstasy. Richard ‘Hell’ Meyers, one of the representatives of the rock culture of the 70’s, came up with a term of ‘blank generation’ (the term may evidently be interpreted as a ‘lost generation’) to describe himself and his friends and thus advanced a philosophy of people seeking self-destruction. They get involved in meaningless and deadly situations to find a justification for living their lives. The film represents a story about wounded young men, who find themselves on an island and meet there a girl sailing the seas in a military launch, as a metaphor for an attempt to save the ‘blank/lost’ generation.

"For as long as I can remember, The Wizard of Oz has been a film that has held a magical, mysterious grip on my imagination. What I find most intriguing is that people generally take the story to be a child's tale. For me, the film has always had an underlying darkness – an evil that runs deeper than the Wicked Witch and resides beneath the polished surface. In Once in a Lullaby, I strive to bring out this darkness and impart an altered version of Dorothy’s dream, which in this case is more of a beautiful nightmare. I recommend listening to it with a nice pair of headphones or versatile speakers."
