'Kiki de Montparnasse' was the unwary muse of major avant-garde painters of the early twentieth century. Memorable witness of a flamboyant Montparnasse, she emancipated from her status as a simple model and became a Queen of the Night, a painter, a press cartoonist, a writer and a cabaret singer.
The breath of the machine fills the air, where the singing can flow. Nina stands in front of the wiggling robot. The soft bodies measure up themselves, sometimes harmonize. The breaths dilate the organs, which swell and fold; transmute the synthetic movement into vital impetus and the vulva into mouth, which inflates until it spreads.

Coming to life as a digital creation, VOPERA’s production, directed by Rachael Hewer, is a world-first; global Zoom auditions and rehearsals, socially distanced orchestral studio recording, individually captured audio recordings, hand-drawn set and costumes, and body-double acting using a homemade green-screen studio overlaid with the recorded cast’s singing faces. Lee Reynolds conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra in a specially reduced arrangement of Ravel’s score, alongside a cast of over 80 singers all recorded in isolation from home.
