The dawn of the 20th century: L’Apollonide, a luxurious and traditional brothel in Paris, is living its last days. In this closed world, where some men fall in love and others become viciously harmful, the women share their secrets, their fears, their joys and their pains.

In the salt harvested in apparently quiet village of Gwenrann (Guérande) on Britanny's Atlantic coast, severed hands turn up. Everything points to a serial killer, somehow linked to similar events decades earlier. A task force is formed by St.Nazaire police detective Jérôme Farche, his junior partner Olivier Morel and university forensic experts Ravel and Maxime Nau. They discover curious facts from the first killings, suggesting several suspects, with clues coming even from a mental asylum. Even prosecutor Jérôme Frank plays a dark part.

But there is a secret in the family that as soon as it explodes, will change it all. Esmeralda and Rosa must lean on each other to get through the day that seems to have something against them.

The film begins with a flashback from the titular character, Antoine. We are introduced to his fixation with female hairdressers which began at a young age. The film uses flashbacks throughout and there are frequent parallels drawn with the past. We are unsure what Antoine has done with his life, however, we know he has fulfilled his childhood ambition, to marry a hairdresser.

La segunda primera matriz (The second first womb) told visually and poetically a story about humanity, from its origin to the Space Race, as a new frontier. In a first section, amongst shots of clouds, swirls and darkness, it referred to the origin of life. (...) After the launch of a rocket and images about exploring space, the film shows a woman naked in the country. The camera makes a slow tilt down of her body. When passing by the pubis, the camera follows a drop of blood that slides by the leg. When it reaches the floor, a parade of miniature war tanks appear, red, like the ones previously shown. The film ends with a sign that says 'But you can also give birth to nothing'.
