In this fun and moving retelling of a treasured scripture story, a modern-day girl named Amelia learns a valuable lesson on integrity through the courage of Alma. When Amelia is teased because her family is taking the missionary discussions, she learns from Alma – as he defends Abinadi against King Noah – to have the faith to stand up for what is right. In this story, Alma (Dallyn Vail Bayles) is faced with the decision of approaching King Noah (Frank Gerrish) and his wicked priests, or risking his live by standing up for the prophet Abinadi (Ken Eklof). Inspired by the 1993 Grammy-winning album, this historic meeting of superpowers stars the King of the Blues performing duets with a pantheon of fellow legends: Ruth Brown, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Irma Thomas and Joe Louis Walker. Interspersed with exclusive interviews, it's an inspired and unprecedented gathering of blues greats that may never be equaled. The performances include B.B.'s signature song, "The Thrill Is Gone," and "Playin' With My Friends," which was penned by Robert Cray just for The Blues Summit. Best of all, with this home video, you sit right on stage where you don't miss a beat.
The B.B. King seen in this 30-minute, 1968 program is a far cry from the amiable patriarch who hawks burgers on TV and sits in with U2 and Eric Clapton. The current B.B. has certainly earned his legendary status, of course, but this is the real thing--a leaner, meaner bluesman, closer to his Mississippi and chitlin' circuit roots but with his trademark stinging guitar leads and bellowing vocals already well established. Joined by a drummer (the redoubtable Sonny Freeman), an organist, and two horn players, King motors through five tight, compact numbers (he's particularly soulful on "Darling You Know I love You," a slow burner) before sitting down with host Ralph J. Gleason. Asked by Gleason what he hopes to achieve, King says, "I'd like the whole world to be able to hear B.B. King sing and play the blues." This fine Jazz Casual installment certainly won't hurt. --Sam Graham
